KleenWeb & Vista

Microsoft's Windows Vista introduced security features designed to make the operating system less susceptible to malware, viruses, and other common threats of the Internet. Concurrently, Vista has comprehensive control over computing aspects pertaining to your computer's communication with "the outside". Given that KleenWeb creates a communication link with filtering servers and also monitors and seeks to control the internet experience, there are some issues that KleenWeb has with Vista as the result. KleenWeb is developing a new version to work more smoothly with Vista and its continual upgrades, but until its release we do not consider KleenWeb fully compatible with the Vista Operating System.

KleenWeb tested fine with the original Vista. Utilizing Vista's automated updating system, however, and newer versions of Vista, have exhibited conflicts with KleenWeb.

One general issue that is easily addressed, follows:

Vista introduced an enhanced level of security to Internet Explorer, called "Protected Mode." According to MicroSoft's Windows Help & How-to website -
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/95211ecc-19b5-439a-b6c5-e2aefd8013031033.mspx  the protected mode feature makes it more difficult for malicious software to be installed on your computer. In addition to helping protect your computer from malicious software, protected mode allows you to install wanted ActiveX controls or add-ons when you are logged in as an administrator. Protected mode is turned on by default in the Internet, intranet, and restricted sites zones and an icon appears on the status bar to let you know that it's running. Protected Mode allows the browser to run with a different set of security privileges than the Operating System. Further information can be found in the Microsoft Developer Network official blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/09/528963.aspx

Software, which until now was compatible with Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP, have issues with the introduction of Protected Mode. Firefox, Mozilla, and Opera users won’t face problems while running Kleenweb on Vista. The issue with Kleenweb is related to the Internet Explorer 7 Protected Mode; other browsers are not affected. Users of Internet Explorer 7 must disable the Protected Mode in order to run the KleenWeb. This is an interim solution while KleenWeb Engineering works on a long term solution to allow full compatibility with Protected Mode.

There are no major concerns regarding disabling the Protected Mode. Disabling Protected Mode in Internet Explorer running Vista will give the end-user the same level of security currently enabled by Internet Explorer 7 users running Windows XP.

Actions to Take: Disable Internet Explorer Protected Mode

The steps described below must be followed for each individual user account in order to apply the settings on all system accounts. The same steps must be followed for any new user account added to the system.

Step 1: Open Internet Explorer and click on Internet Options at the Tools Menu.

Step 2: On the Security Tab, uncheck the option "Enable Protected Mode" and choose OK.

Step 3 (optional): With Protected Mode off, IE will display a warning near the top of the browser, warning that Protected Mode is turned off. Right click on the Protected Mode warning message as shown below and click on the "Don't show this message again" option. This will stop this warning message from appearing.

Additional Notes: Windows Vista Parental Controls Compatibility

KleenWeb labs have confirmed that running Windows Vista Parental Controls with KleenWeb can raise some problems. It’s important to certify that Windows Vista Parental Controls is disabled before installing KleenWeb. (Parental Control are only offered in the Home Basic Premium versions of Vista.) The Microsoft Windows Vista Parental Controls comes disabled by default after installing the operating system so users who haven’t specifically enabled it don’t need to change their system.

How to disable Microsoft Windows Vista Parental Controls?
Step 1: Open Windows Control Panel at the Start Menu and click on "Setup parental controls for any user".

Step 2: Click on each user with "Standard User" privileges.

Step 3: Verify that Parental Controls is marked as off for each Standard User and
